About the Dog Food Price Index

Dog Food Price Index is a data-driven utility built to bring transparency to pet nutrition costs. Instead of relying on marketing claims or sticker prices, we use consistent mathematical normalization to show you the true value of every bag.

Our tool processes technical data from major brands at Walmart to provide three essential unit metrics:

  • Cost per pound: the standard weight-based value.
  • Cost per cup: practical budgeting for daily feeding.
  • Cost per 1,000 kcal: the gold standard for nutritional value.

Our methodology

We believe that shoppers deserve to know the price of the nutrition, not just the price of the packaging. Because different dog foods have vastly different caloric densities, a "cheaper" 40 lb bag may actually cost more per meal than a premium 30 lb bag.

We calculate our value index by:

  • Extracting the guaranteed analysis and calorie content (kcal/kg) from manufacturer technical sheets.
  • Normalizing that data against current Walmart retail pricing.
  • Updating our index regularly to account for price fluctuations and rollbacks.

Note to shoppers: While we strive for 100% accuracy, prices and formulations can change. Always verify the final details on Walmart.com before purchasing.
